Dark Knight Dramaturgy

A Bay Area Theater Blog

About

I am a writer, dramaturg, and playwright living in the Bay Area who believes that theater can be a powerful social event that has the ability to alter and advance human perspectives. Dramaturgy adapts to the idiosyncratic needs of a given project, so it is difficult to define. But at its core the role of a production dramaturg is to help create good theater by providing intellectual and creative support. Over the past few years, I have been less and less in the rehearsal room as I have focused more on audience dramaturgy: writing articles that add background and context to the shows patrons see.

Disclaimer: I am currently the publications manager at American Conservatory Theater, but the opinions you will find here do not necessarily reflect any opinions of A.C.T.

  1. Hi,

    I’m a founding member of local theatre company Sleepwalkers Theatre.

    We’re about to launch a huge trilogy of plays about the end of the world that will make up our entire next season.

    As a member of the bay area theatre community and a huage comic book geek I’ve been pretty intrigued by your blog for a while.

    The plays we’re about to launch are all written by playwrite J.C. Lee. He’s also a comic book geek, in fact there’s a lot of super hero stuff in the trilogy.

    I wanted to send you some info about it and some comps when it all starts but I can’t figure out how to contact you.

    So that’s why I’m posting this as a comment. (Feel free to erase it once you’ve read it. You won’t hurt my feelings)

    Pleas email me back if your interested.

    I am new to the field of dramaturgy but I am also a huge fan of Batman, so the way you manage to meld the superhero myth and theater is very appealing to me.

    Thanks.

  4. You are wrong about the german, the caption is in Norwegian (-;

    Caption: KIRSTEN FLAGSTAD MED SIN AKKOMPAGNATØR EDWIN MCARTHUR” TURNÉ I USA HØSTEN 1935. MCARTHUR ER MANNEN BAK PSEUDONYMET COSME MCMOON SOM VAR AKKOMPAGNATØR FOR FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS. [wrong even in German!]

    Nice article,
